The format of our patterns
Our vintage reproduction patterns show the original design line, or 'stitching' line, and the seam allowances. Original notations on the pattern pieces, such as 'gather' or 'make dart', are included in both German and English. Small numbers, often found in corners or along seams, indicate how and where different pieces join together. The stitching line is one of the most important lines marked on a pattern. Nowadays however, most modern patterns only show one outer cutting line which includes the seam allowance. While this is convenient and very useful, if you do want to mark the actual seam line then it's often tedious to measure and locate the stitching line. Precise sewing means that dressmakers need to know the exact position of lines and corners in order to sew accurately, plan construction techniques and make pattern adjustments.
As the stitching line is clearly marked on our patterns, plus it is easy to change the width of the seam allowances or remove it if you prefer — simply draw in a new line or cut them off!
Here is an example of the features included on our patterns:
Types of materials we use
- Our patterns are printed on 40-GSM semi-transparent paper.
- It is made from 70% recycled materials and is made in Germany.
- We can print any length, therefore long length pattern pieces, such as gowns and coats, are printed full-size. There may be the occasional pattern piece that is too wide for our widest paper (91.4 cm), but that is rare!
- The paper is especially designed for cutting out on top of fabric, because the back side is very slightly textured so that it does not slide around on the fabric, whilst the top side is smoother for printing and writing on.
- All
of our patterns are printed 'in-house' individually on demand.
This premium-quality paper is more expensive for us to purchase in a width suitable for a large-format printer. However, we believe that the benefits provided by the semi-transparency and strength offset this extra cost.
Postage options for our printed patterns
